ΔΙΑΣΦΑΛΙΣΗ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΗΣ ΚΛΗΡΟΝΟΜΙΑΣ

Safeguarding our cultural heritage from natural disasters.

In Greece there are hundreds of open-air cultural heritage monuments such as monasteries, archeological sites, theatres, libraries, and museums which must be protected because they are exposed to all kinds of natural disasters and dangers due to human activity and the climate change.

Threats

Fire is a major threat as it can totally destroy archeological sites, ancient theaters, museums, monuments and various important objects.

Earthquakes are very destructive because the monuments are old so they can be easily damaged.

Floods and landslides are equally dangerous. They can swallow the beauty of the monuments as well as their history.

Protection

Special measures should be taken for every monument because each one of them faces different threats. They should be protected against all natural disasters.

  • There should be measures to protect them in case of a disaster.
  • There should be a plan of action when disaster strikes.
  • There should be special equipment to put out fires.
  • Statues, books, paintings should be fastened to prevent them from falling and breaking.
  • People working at museums and archeological sites should be trained to deal with the disaster.
  • There should be measures concerning the restoration of the damaged monuments and museums.
  • Governments should solve the problems caused by the climate change which result in natural disasters.
  • The public should be informed about the problem and trained to volunteer to help protect cultural heritage.
